Let's Talk Turmeric

Pulp Story Juice recently contacted me and asked if I'd be interested in trying some of their turmeric juices and writing an honest review on my blog. I'm always looking for ways to feel healthier, so of course I said yes! This is also my first time being asked to review a product for a company, so I must admit - I'm pretty excited. (:

All opinions in this blog post are my own. This post is not a paid promotion.

The Benefits of Turmeric?

Pulp Story mailed me (in a very snazzy cooler box!) 16 individual wellness juice shots. But before I went ahead and tried them out, I decided to learn more abut the ingredient these juices are centered upon: turmeric.

Turmeric is a plant, and from the turmeric plant comes turmeric spice, commonly used to flavor things like curry, cheese, and mustard! But the root of the turmeric plant actually contains certain medicinal properties - particularly when it comes to fighting inflammation.

Inflammation, especially of the airways and joints, is something that afflicts many cystic fibrosis patients, myself included. Needless to say, the thought of drinking a little bit of juice each day to help combat a symptom that painfully disrupts my daily life was super appealing!

The following are just some of the conditions that turmeric may help with:

  • arthritis
  • heart burn
  • joint pain (!!!)
  • stomach pain
  • Crohn's disease
  • ulcerative colitis
  • diarrhea
  • gas/bloating
  • irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • gallbladder disorders
  • high cholesterol
  • headaches
  • bronchitis
  • lung infections (!!!)
  • fibromyalgia
  • fever
  • menstral problems (!!!)
  • water retention
  • urinary bladder inflammation
  • kidney problems

The thing is, some manufacturers (like the ones that put turmeric powders and products in stores) process turmeric in a way that actually drains the plant of its medicinal properties. The good news? Pulp Story isn't one of those companies. You can read all about the process they use on the homepage of their website.

My Experience

I received 4 different flavors of Pulp Story's turmeric juice shots: Turmerics of Endearment, Cherry Poppins, Pomegranates of the Caribbean, and Some Like It Spicy. Don't let the names fool you: all four of these bad boys are chocked full of that good, good turmeric.

The very first one I tried was Some Like It Spicy, and let me tell you - I DON'T! This is no fault of the juice itself, though: I have never been able to tolerate any spice of any kind. My tongue was burning up like a throwback Jonas Brothers' song! That said, once I finished guzzling cold water at the kitchen sink, I noticed that I felt significantly more awake than I had before. Real? Placebo? Not quite sure, friends, but I felt it.

In fact, I felt that same buzzing/energizing/head-clearing sensation after taking every juice shot, no matter the flavor! This was really helpful on days where my sinuses were especially clogged - picture Vicks® VapoRub™ in a tiny little drink.

That being said, getting a spicy wake-up call was the only benefit I conciously experienced when it came to these juices. Shortly after ingesting each juice, the pleasant buzzing in my face and throat subsided: I didn't notice any long-lasting improvements in my fatigue. During the week that I tried these shots, I also happened to catch a nasty cold and was admitted to the hospital, but it would be ludicrous to blame the shots themselves for that! There are some parts of cystic fibrosis that just can't be helped.

On the days that I didn't really feel like taking a juice shot (which was often, since I much prefer vegetables to fruit), I simply poured one into a smoothie filled with bananas, acai berry, almond milk, kale, chia seeds, and flax seeds and couldn't taste it at all! Nothing wrong with a little boost, especially when every juice shot contains pure ingredients.

Some Like It Spicy, for example, is made of only turmeric juice, ginger juice, lemon juice, and cayenne powder. My personal favorite, Cherry Poppins, contains ginger juice, turmeric juice, lemon juice, pineapple juice, and cherry juice.

The Bottom Line

Though it was really fun to try something new for my health and the juice shots added a nice zest to my morning smoothies, I didn't notice any significant improvements to my energy levels or inflammation. For that reason, I don't plan on repurchasing any turmeric shots for myself.

However, I am so thankful to Pulp Story for reaching out to me - they've been an amazing company to work with! If you want to try their turmeric juices for yourself, click here. You can also follow Pulp Story on Facebook, Instagram,  and Twitter for daily doses of health-related encouragement.

Be well!
